About Moko Jumbie
The Moko Jumbie is a stilt-walking spirit figure rooted in African tradition, brought to the Caribbean through the transatlantic slave trade. In West African culture, "Moko" represents a protective deity, while "Jumbie" is a Caribbean term for a ghost or spirit. These towering figures, often dressed in colorful costumes and masks, symbolize guardianship and ancestral wisdom. Seen in Caribbean carnivals and festivals, Moko Jumbies use their height to "see danger before it arrives," protecting the community. Today, they remain a powerful cultural icon, blending African spirituality with Caribbean celebration, embodying resilience, artistry, and ancestral connection.
